Fellow Spotlight: Gary Ashcroft

This week we talked with Gary Ashcroft for our profile series Fellow Spotlights.  We discussed what was appealing to him about joining the Spencer Frye Fellowship Program, what his best experience has been so far, and what some of Gary’s favorite things about Athens are.

What interested you most about the Spencer Frye Fellowship Program?

The opportunity to perform legislative research.

What have you learned from your time as a Fellow?

I have learned that the people of Athens have a great respect for Spencer and for what he has done so far in the legislature. I have also learned more about the importance of constituent outreach and being responsive to the concerns of constituents.

What’s been the best experience as a Fellow so far?

Conducting legislative research for this upcoming session.

What do you love most about Athens?

I really love the farmer’s market in Bishop Park, Big City Bread Café, and Avid Bookstore.

What are your future goals? 

I would like to work for an international governmental organization or to serve as a prosecutor.

Favorite Athens hang-out?

Unfortunately the law library, although I would prefer to hang out more at Hendershots.

Favorite local musician/band?  

REM

Where’s the most interesting place you’ve ever traveled?

Kerak, Jordan

Name something that people might be surprised to know about you.

I like to grow my own oyster mushrooms.
